The municipality and city of Albufeira is steeped in a rich history. Originally discovered in 970bc, in Roman times is was known as Baltum. During the Moors occupation it became an important trading port, however during the ´war of the Miguels´ the town was almost destroyed and it was only the advent of Tourism that saw it returned to its former glory.
